Raw sugar syrup is brown, and raw cooking oils contain bitter natural compounds. Instead of bleaching them with harsh chemicals, the liquid is mixed with powdered activated carbon. The carbon absorbs the brown colors and bitter tastes, and is then completely filtered out, leaving pure, clear food behind.

Mixing

The powdered carbon is gently stirred into the warm, liquid food (like melted sugar or raw oil).

Contact Time

The mixture sits for a short time (usually 15-30 minutes), allowing the carbon to absorb all the unwanted colors and tastes.

Filtering

The liquid is pushed through a very fine filter. The carbon powder—now holding all the dirt and color—gets trapped, letting only pure liquid through.

Final Check

The clear liquid is tested to ensure it meets strict color and taste standards before being packaged or crystallized into solid food.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, it is completely safe. Food-grade carbon is highly purified, and it is entirely filtered out of the liquid before the food is packaged. You do not eat the carbon itself.

Wood creates a very porous, "fluffy" carbon with large holes. The molecules that make raw sugar brown are very large, so they need those large holes to get trapped.

We select specific grades of carbon designed to target only colors and off-tastes, leaving the good nutrients behind in juices and oils.
