Refineries use special liquid chemicals (like "amines") to wash their gas, and expensive metal "catalysts" to process oil. Over time, these get contaminated by stray dirt and sludge. By passing the liquids through a carbon filter first, the carbon catches the dirt. The carbon sacrifices itself to keep the expensive parts of the factory running perfectly.

Refineries pump liquids at incredibly high speeds and pressures. If the carbon is cheap and soft, it will be crushed into a fine black dust that will wash right into the expensive machinery.
